Born in Cornwall in 1926, Christopher Middleton studied at Merton College, Oxford, and taught German at Kings College, London. Since 1965 he has taught at the University of Texas, Austin.
This original and unself-centered book holds in mind, at once, terror, paradise as subtle music, and the god Dionysos vanishing, and it has invented a music bravely maatched to such breadth of voice.
